چکیده

* I want to thank Hans Haller and Mark Stegeman for their valuable suggestions and support. The paper benefited from the comments of participants in the 1997 SITE Summer Workshop. Abstract We consider a population of players playing a Prisoners' Dilemma Game in a local interaction setting, using a formalism of automata networks. Sufficient conditions for existence of an equilibrium where cooperation coexists with non-cooperation (a mixed equilibrium) are derived and properties of an equilibrium are discussed. In a mixed equilibrium the highest payoff will be obtained by a cooperator. For a special one-dimensional case the equilibrium set is fully characterized. We further consider a model where agents can choose (to some extent) whom of their neighbors they want to play with. Results of computer simulations are reported. The most striking feature of simulations is the fact that very organized structures can be observed starting with completely random initial conditions.

Signed Networks, Triadic Interactions and the Evolution of Cooperation

Introduction. In this paper we examine how cooperation can be supported by negative ties and triadic interactions. Previous research has demonstrated that cooperation is more likely to evolve in social dilemma games, such as the Prisoners Dilemma, if the game is played in networks [1, 4, 5, 12]. Besides sparseness [3, 4, 5], the structure of the network is also important because on top of direc...

Modeling Cooperation between Nodes in Wireless Networks by APD Game

Cooperation is the foundation of many protocols in wireless networks. Without cooperation, the performance of a network significantly decreases. Hence, all nodes in traditional networks are required to cooperate with each other. In this paper, instead of traditional networks, a network of rational and autonomous nodes is considered, which means that each node itself can decide whe...

Voluntary Cooperation Based on Equilibrium Retribution – An Experiment Testing Finite-Horizon Folk Theorems

Unlike previous attempts to implement cooperation in a prisoners’ dilemma game with an infinite horizon in the laboratory, we focus on extended prisoners’ dilemma games in which a second (pure strategy) equilibrium allows for voluntary cooperation in all but the last round. Our four main experimental treatments distinguish long versus short horizon and strict versus non-strict additional equili...

The Prisoners' Dilemma Revisited

Cooperation has always been recognised as a fundamental ingredient in the creation of societies and the generation of wealth. As a concept, it has been studied for many years. Yet, in practice, its emergence and persistence are less understood. In the following a game theoretic approach to the study of cooperation based on the Prisoners' Dilemma is reviewed. Using a Genetic Algorithm, strategie...
